What Does a Speech Therapist Do?

Speech therapists, also known as speech-language pathologists, specialize in diagnosing and treating communication disorders. These may include difficulties with speech production, language comprehension and expression, social communication, and even swallowing challenges. A speech therapist’s role involves:

Assessing a child’s speech and language abilities.
Identifying areas of difficulty, such as articulation, fluency, or understanding language.
Developing personalized therapy plans tailored to the child’s specific needs.
Using evidence-based techniques to enhance speech clarity, vocabulary, and sentence structure.
Supporting non-verbal communication through tools like PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) or AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication).

Speech therapists also collaborate with families and educators to ensure progress extends beyond the therapy sessions into everyday life.
